Frequenlty Asked Questions

The following questions have been asked by many people who inquire about our school. If you have a question that is not listed here, please call us so that we can answer any other queestions you might have.

Q: Who can join Blue Tiger Martial Arts?
A: Our school is open to individual and family memberships. We have a great family plan!

Q: What style of Martial Arts do you teach?
A: We teach Tong Soo Do a traditional Korean Martial art with an more modern layered method of teaching to ensure the success of all students. We also teach a variety of other martial arts such as Grappling, Kendo/Kumdo, Iaido/Kuhapdo and both traditional korean and traditional Okinawan weapons.

Q: How long will it take to become proficient in the Martial Arts?
A: You will begin to acquire essential skills after only a few classes. It takes many years to become highly proficient in the Martial Arts, but important lessons are learned every step of the way.

Q: How long will it take to get my Black Belt?
A: This is a hard question to answer because it all depends on the amount of training that an individual puts in. As a general rule, (this should not be taken as an exact measurement.)if a student is training 3 days per week, it will take takes an average of two and one half to 3 years for an adult to attain Black Belt level and a little longer for children.

You cannot achieve your Black Belt until you are a minimum of 14 years old, although younger students may become Junior Black Belts at an earlier age.

Q: The martial arts look like a violent, aggressive activity. Will my child be more prone to fighting if they join your school?
A: A popular myth is that the martial arts are violent and aggressive. This is mainly due to television and the movies. On the contrary, the martial arts subdue the overly aggressive, hyperactive child and and produces a more respectful andconfient child so that thinking not fighting becomes the most common method for a child to deal with conflict. This pertains to adults as well.

Q: I feel as if I am too old to start training in the martial arts. Don't you have to be young and strong to begin training?
A: You can start training at any age. Everyone works at their own level. This is true no matter what belt you attain. Safety is our number one concern and if an exercise or activity hurts or feels uncomfortable, you are not required to do it.

Q: My child is already very energetic and I am afraid that he or she will use these newly acquired skills to hurt someone. What do you do about this?
A: Proper ethics are taught at our school. Students are taught never to practice on their brother, sister, neighbors, and especially on anyone on the playground.
The martial arts are for self-defense, not fighting. The very last thing a student should do is enter into a physical confrontation. If they can talk their way out of a situation or get away then they should do so.
That is what we teach—awareness and boundary-setting first, fighting as a last resort only.

Q: What is your class schedule?
A: Please refer to the class schedule page of this web site.

Q: How many classes per week can students attend?
A: Students attend as many classes as often as their membership plan permits with the exception of the Tiny Tigers (ages 5 to 7) who attend class twice a week.

Q: My son/daughter is very nervous about joining. Can parents stay and watch during class?
A: Parents are encouraged to stay and watch. We have a special “observation area” for that purpose. The only thing that we do ask is that you try to refrain from "coaching" your child from the side. It can be very confusing for the child if the instructors and the parents are giving directions.

Q: Are there any religious connotations in your style of Karate?
A: No

Q: How many instructors are there per class?
A: It depends on class size, but usually there are 2 adult instructors per class.

Q: If I have trained at another school and attained a certain belt level, can I keep my same rank?
A: There is a short evaluation period and after this time you may wear your attained belt with permission. It depends on what your prior rank was and how long it has been since you stopped training (if at all).

Q: My son or daughter has problems with bullies at school. Will joining your Karate school help them in this area?
A: Periodic discussions are held to identify any problems students may be having in this area. We teach our students how to deal with these situations.

Q: Can I come in and just watch a class to see what you do?
A: Spectators are welcome anytime.

Q: Do you offer any Specials?
A: We sure do - Please call for the latest specials as our website is still under construction our number is 281-239-6401.
