Grappling, when taught correctly is a very efficient self-defense system.
The Gracie family is responsible for bringing the sport to the US in the form of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The popularity of all grappling styles has increased in recent years because of the increased interest in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
Our grappling program is a combination of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, and the basic controlling techniques of traditional karate.
Techniques in grappling are divided into several different categories, takedowns, arm locks, leg locks, chokes, and break falls.
Grappling techniques are not easy to learn. Learning the basics will normally take at least a year of training. Unlike other styles of martial arts, which normally require about 2 1/2 -4 years of study to earn a black belt, earning a black belt in grappling usually requires 7-10 years of training. It is an intense sport that requires a good deal of commitment. However, ask anyone who has mastered the system and they’ll tell you its well worth the effort, and the wait!
Mrs. Melissa Davis is our head grappling instructor at Blue Tiger Martial Arts.
She holds the rank of Blue Belt in Gracie Jiujitsu under Mr. Tony Torres-Aponte. Mr. Torres-Aponte is a direct student under both Royce and Rickson Gracie.
